Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned on Friday that Russia could stage serious “provocations” against Poland, including cyberattacks, drone strikes and attacks on critical infrastructure.

The warning came after a European Union summit in Brussels, where leaders discussed support for Ukraine and Europe’s role in any future peace process with Russia.

Poland, an EU and NATO member on the bloc’s eastern flank, borders Ukraine and has been one of Kyiv’s strongest backers since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

“Let us be aware of this, let us not be afraid,” Tusk said, adding that Poland was increasingly well prepared for “all possible events.”

Possible Russian provocations

Tusk said some European leaders had privately confirmed information about possible Russian actions.

He said they could go beyond hybrid operations and include drone strikes, cyberattacks and attacks on critical infrastructure.

The Polish prime minister also said there was no sign Moscow wanted talks to end the war against Ukraine. “Nothing indicates that Russia today is interested in any negotiations,” Tusk said.

Poland wants role in talks

Tusk said Poland would not accept any EU arrangements on a possible ceasefire or future peace deal between Ukraine and Russia if Warsaw was excluded.

“No such format can usurp the right to represent the whole European Union,” he said. “Poland will not respect any arrangements made without its participation.”

Tusk said EU leaders had also discussed contacts between an official working with European Council President António Costa and Kremlin representatives.

He said Costa had made clear the contacts were not negotiations, but an attempt to establish a possible communication channel.
